Speech delivered by Cuban President Raúl Castro Ruz during the closing session of the National Assembly of People's Power 8th Legislature, December 21, 2017
Compañeras and compañeros:
It is my responsibility to make the closing remarks for this last Period of Ordinary Sessions of the National Assembly of People's Power's 8th Legislature. On this occasion, I will address several topics of national and international relevance.
Between September 8 and 10, the country was struck by Hurricane Irma, described as the most powerful and violent extreme weather event in the history of the Atlantic Ocean, which impacted, to one degree or another, 12 provinces, with strong winds, heavy rain, and severe coastal flooding.
A principle remains unchanged: the Revolution will not leave anyone homeless and measures are already taken so that no Cuban family is left to their fate.

Let us face recovery with the example of the Commander-in-Chief of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, who with his permanent faith in victory and strong will has taught us that there are no impossible tasks.
“Cuba y Estados Unidos deben aprender el arte de la convivencia civilizada, basada en el respeto a las diferencias entre ambos gobiernos y en la cooperación en temas de interés común”.
La Isla no aceptará ninguna pretensión de aconsejar ni presionar en materia de sus asuntos internos. “Las contrapartes estadounidenses no deberían proponerse relacionarse con la sociedad cubana como si en Cuba no hubiera un gobierno soberano”.
